Cause of Sickle Cell Anemia

This disease is caused by a change in the genetics that command the body to make the iron-rich compound in red blood cells(Hemoglobin). Hemoglobin(HB) is basically the protein in the red blood cells that carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body.
The deformation in the hemoglobin starts to change the shape of red blood cells from a disc shape to the shape of a sickle. The shape of this sickle is irregular, bursts, and cannot move or assist oxygen transportation.

Sickle cell Anemia treatment in India

Allogeneic Bone Marrow transplantation is the only Sickle cell Anemia treatment in India. This treatment uses the healthy blood stem cells from the donor in order to replace bone marrow in an infected person. The donor can be a family member or any other compatible person. The radiation therapy destroys the diseased cells, while the transplanted bone marrow starts developing new healthy cells.
